Lisa Capretto helps us go inside the mind of a teacher (third-grade educator Stacey Nelson) to discover what parents should and shouldn't do to make the most of the school year.
The relationship between teachers and parents is an extremely powerful component in student success. Yet so many parents go through the school year without communicating with the teacher or understanding what to do (or avoid) to make the most of the year.
So we went straight to the source and spoke with a teacher willing to reveal it all. It boils down to three general guidelines: respect the teacher, be involved and be organized. |

Transitioning from summer to the school year can be a bit hectic, what with adjusting to a new sleep schedule, packing lunches, doing homework and catching the bus. It can be tough to wrangle the kids, especially in the mornings! From the typical "eating breakfast in the car" to the less common "Febreezing the kids after they've slept in their school clothes," it seems as if moms will do anything to get the kids to school on time.
Check out the helpful (and hilarious) list of creative "shortcuts" here! |

It's seems like every day there is a new recall! Every year 76 million Americans get sick from food. Nothing you can do will ever guarantee 100 percent protection against food-borne illness, but there are some simple precautions that help to reduce your risk. Below are "10 Commandments of Food Safety"—basically the advice that we keep hearing again and again from food-safety experts.
- Use a "refrigerator thermometer" to keep your food stored at a safe temperature (below 40 degrees Fahrenheit).
- Defrost food in the refrigerator, the microwave or in cold water, never on the counter.
- Always use separate cutting boards for raw meat/poultry/fish and produce/cooked foods.
- Always cook meat to proper temperatures, using a calibrated instant-read thermometer to make sure.
- Avoid unpasteurized ("raw") milk and cheeses made from unpasteurized milk that are aged less than 60 days.
- Never eat "runny" eggs or foods, such as cookie dough, that contain raw eggs.
- Always wash your hands in warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds before handling food and after touching raw meat, poultry or eggs.
- Always heat leftover foods to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Never eat meat, poultry, eggs or sliced fresh fruits and vegetables that have been left out for more than two hours (one hour in temperatures hotter than 90 degrees Fahrenheit).
- Whenever there’s a food recall, check products stored at home to make sure they are safe.

Pizza. In my humble opinion, it's awesome. I mean, even bad pizza is still pizza, which makes it pretty great by default. Whether you prefer thin crust or deep dish, plain or loaded, I think we can all agree. We like pizza! According to psychiatrist Anthony Pietropinto, you can tell a lot about a person’s personality by the pizza they order. Here's how he breaks it down:
- Pepperoni love adventure, they are exciting and unpredictable and never dull.
- Mushrooms maniacs are energetic, playful and have a great sense of humor.
- Beef Lovers usually stick to the basics: simple and predictable, they go with the usual routine. They know what works and they don’t go beyond that.
- Ham and and/or pineapple lovers are unrestrained and open-minded and very colorful; lovers of life.
- Sausage maniacs are straight-forward; they don’t hesitate to ask for what they need.
- Anchovie-aholics are logical and understand what is coming their way.
- Veggie lovers are caring and sensitive; wonderful human beings.
- Plain Cheese lovers are loyal and willing to do whatever it takes to win or serve.
- The Works people are adventurous and enjoyable; jovial in spirit.

With hundreds of millions of eggs being recalled amid a salmonella outbreak, the FDA offers the following safety advice on its website:
- Don't eat recalled eggs or products containing recalled eggs. Recalled eggs might still be in grocery stores, restaurants and consumers' homes. Consumers who have recalled eggs should discard them or return them to their retailer for a refund. Individuals who think they might have become ill from eating recalled eggs should consult their health care providers.
- Keep shell eggs refrigerated at temperatures no higher than 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius) at all times.
- Discard cracked or dirty eggs.
- Wash hands, cooking utensils and food preparation surfaces with soap and water after contact with raw eggs.
- Eggs should be cooked until both the white and the yolk are firm, and should be eaten promptly after cooking.
- Do not keep eggs warm or at room temperature for more than two hours.
- Refrigerate unused or leftover egg-containing foods promptly.
- Avoid eating raw eggs.
- Avoid restaurant dishes made with raw or undercooked, unpasteurized eggs. Restaurants should use pasteurized eggs in any recipe (such as Hollandaise sauce or Caesar salad dressing) that calls for raw eggs.
- Consumption of raw or undercooked eggs should be avoided, especially by young children, the elderly and persons with weakened immune systems or debilitating illnesses.
The Egg Safety Center (yes, it's a real thing) has a complete list of recalled eggs, their expiration dates and brands. |

So long, Al Copeland's house! The pink bulldozers of Demo Diva have followed the family's wishes and demolished the house of the former fried chicken king on Folse Drive. The family is still deciding what to do with the property. I say, a permanent Christmas display. With free Popeye's! Rumor has it, a Christmas park IS a possibility for the space...no word on free Popeye's. Oh well.
