Stocking up for the school year? If you'd like to soften the blow of back-to-school shopping, here are some helpful tips.
Take a good look at what you've already got. Chances are, you may not need as much as you think.
Make a list. Don't buy things that you don't really need.
Buy online. Look for promotional codes and coupons at www.retailmenot.com. For college students, you can get a year of free shipping from www.amazon.com by signing up for a new Amazon student account.
Hit up the dollar store. You'll find better deals than in a discount megastore, and without the massive crowds.
Buy used books, or better yet, borrow. Buy gently used versions online or borrow books from a site like www.chegg.com. Or check your local library.
Try www.craigslist.org and yard sales for clothes. Or organize a clothing swap with your neighbors. Chances are, they'll have some great barely-worn stuff in your child's size.
American Idol auditions were back in New Orleans this season! Looks like Dad (with former contestant Chris Sligh) was born ready. Check out a few of this year's hopefuls below.

It's official. According to new statistics, Louisiana is the laziest state in the nation. But before you yawn and half-heartedly shake your fist in the air, the term "lazy" is a bit misleading. The statistic does not mean lacking work ethic, but is more of a measure of leisure time spent doing sedentary activities than those that require more physical effort. The study also says we Louisianians sleep more, watch more TV, socialize and relax more than other states. The report also says we like "thinking and goofing off." Heh. Plus, the average time spent "working" by Louisianians is shorter than in other states. I think whoever put together these statistics is clearly underestimating the amount of "work" that goes into eating crawfish. Oh, and one more thing. Louisiana was also ranked the HAPPIEST state in the nation. Coincidence?
Are you planning a family trip to an amusement park during these 89 Days of Summer Fun? 7,000 Ameicans go to the emergency room every year after getting injured on a carnival ride. Here are some tips to avoid getting hurt at an amusement park:
Go on a weekday when it's less crowded.
Wear proper shoes and clothes.
Buckle up on the ride.
Keep arms, legs, and head inside the compartment.
Make sure the ride has completely ended before exiting.
Have everyone wear the same color t-shirt, so everyone can easily locate each other.
When you think of summer, what comes to mind? Humidity? Check. Flip-flops? Check. Mosquitos? Check! According to Mirriam-Webster, these are the top 10 words of summer:
Finally, after years of debate (and impatience on my part), one of life's great mysteries has been solved. According to student researchers at the University of Cambridge, it takes 3481 licks to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop. That's a lot of licks. No wonder I never made it!
These days, when I look in the mirror, I'm forced to admit it. I'm getting older. Those late night plates of chili fries don't have the same effect (or non-effect) they used to! But there are a few ways we can help slow the aging process and increase our health, according to Dr. Oz. Here's what he has to say:
